Laminate and luxury vinyl plank are the two most popular wood-look floors we install, and homeowners across the southwest suburbs ask us to compare them almost every week. Both are affordable and durable, but one key difference usually decides which is right for your space.
The Core Difference
Laminate is built around a high-density fiberboard core - essentially compressed wood - under a photographic wear layer. LVP's core is entirely synthetic (PVC-based). That's the whole story behind why they perform so differently around moisture.
Water Resistance Decides It
LVP is fully waterproof and handles spills, humidity, and even basement conditions without issue. Laminate's wood-based core can swell if water gets into the seams, so it's best kept to drier rooms like bedrooms and living areas - not kitchens, bathrooms, or basements. If you're flooring a space with any moisture risk, LVP is the safer call every time.
Feel and Sound
Laminate tends to feel harder and more like real wood underfoot, which some homeowners prefer in main living spaces. LVP is softer, warmer, and quieter to walk on - a nice bonus in kitchens where you're standing for longer stretches.
Cost Comparison
The two are priced similarly installed, with budget laminate sometimes running a bit cheaper and premium LVP costing a bit more. We'll always give you one complete installed number for either option during your free estimate so you're comparing apples to apples.
Which Should You Choose by Room?
- Kitchens, basements, mudrooms: LVP, for its waterproof core.
- Bedrooms and living rooms: laminate, for its hard, wood-like feel and value.
- Homes with pets: LVP, for worry-free cleanup.
- Stairs: see our laminate stairs page for a durable, budget-friendly option.
